Building a Catalog with AI — From Excel File to Finished Catalog
Most writing about building a catalog with AI is about generating images or marketing copy. The real work is elsewhere: turning a messy product list into an organized catalog.
Where the real problem is
A wholesaler's product list usually looks like this: several Excel sheets, columns with arbitrary names, images pasted inside cells, and descriptions that are either empty or written in the supplier's language.
No template-based tool solves this, because a template assumes your data is already tidy.
What the AI actually does
1) Column detection
Instead of you mapping each column, the model sees a few sample rows and works it out. "Price", "Unit price" and "价格" all mean the same thing.
2) Filling in missing descriptions
If a product has no description, a short realistic one is written from its name and specs. Important: it does not invent features. If your data does not say the item is waterproof, the description will not say so either.
3) Translating to the target market
The same products can be exported in English, Arabic, Russian or any other language.
What we deliberately keep away from the AI
- Prices stay untouched. No model should ever "improve" a number.
- Product codes stay exactly as they are.
- Images never go to the model. Each row gets an id, only text is sent, and the result comes back with the same id. Matching images to products is arithmetic, not a guess.
What does it cost?
Processing a 500-product file usually costs a few cents — almost always cheaper than an hour of manual work.
Where to start
Your current Excel file is enough. Sign in to the online catalog maker and upload it.
